Internet Research Project

Name of tool researched: inSuggest
Link to inSuggest
Summary: I was unable to see that actual strategy for how the search engine works, From what I can tell this search engine is takes that tags from certain websites that the user chooses and then searches for websites that have similar subject content.
Strengths: The major strength of this search engine would have to be how user friendly it is. The second you visit the website you are already an instant expert on how to use it.
Weaknesses: I would have to say that the major weakness of this search engine is that a user must already know websites that they are looking for in order to find similar sites. This is a great secondary search tool but I would not recommend this search engine for primary research.
Search Engines, Directories, and other applications searched: From exploring this website, I cannot find out if or what other search engines are used. I would not consider this search engine as a megacrawler.
From what I have found this website does not have an advanced search option. It also does not work with any operators.
The overall perception that I get from inSuggest is that it started with a great idea and instead of focusing on functionality, the decided to make it more of a game.

Research Journal #7c Field Reseach Plan

For my field research I am planning on conducting an interview with my Political Science Professor. I am choosing to interview him because he is and expert in the field of international politics and he has offered very insightful conversation on the few occasions that we have discussed political matters. I have yet to form an extremely concise topic for my research paper, but from what I have learned thus far in my research I will focus my questions on whether or not Henry Kissinger's Idea of Diplomacy is or was ever adopted fully by the United States political structure.

Research Journal #7b Internet Research Tool Test

Resource used: inSuggest.com
Keywords used: In my case my tool did not allow for key words or search strings, it only allowed for me to enter a website on my topic. So the first website that I entered was State.Gov.
Date of search: 10/18/09
Number of hits: this website only brings up 8 hits for every website that you search.
Relevance of hits: This was the one part of this site that I really enjoyed, each search that I did brought back very relevant sites, I would give this site a 5 for relevance of Hits.

Research Journal #7a Internet Research Tools

As discussed in class on Thursday, October 1, 2009, I prefer to use Google as my primary search engine. In all honesty I do not know why I have decided to use it so much. When it comes to the things that I like about Google, I would have to say that the primary feature I enjoy is that google has marketed themselves so well. Almost every website that I visit has a Google search box and it is so easy to use. When it comes to Google I also enjoy there maps. Google has done the best job at incorporating maps into the searches that I do. I would say that my main complaint with Google is the Ads on the page they can be very very distracting and I do not like the fact that websites can pay Google to be on the top of the list when certain items are searched. I feel as though this takes away from the accuracy of the individual searches.

Revision of search strings:
I realized after reading the the comments on my search strings that I could put Henry Kissinger's name in parenthesis and I could use the + sign to narrow my searches better.
Diplomacy +(Henry Kissinger)

Research Journal #3c Develop a Research Question

The text book says that a good way to start is by writing a question that starts off with each of the following words: who, what, when, where, how, why, should, would.
  • Who as effected most by the ideas that Henry Kissinger presented in his book on Diplomacy?
  • What would be the costs and benefits of making Henry Kissinger's idea of diplomacy our foreign policy?
  • When would Diplomacy, as defined by Henry Kissinger, be the most logical route for American to take in terms of foreign policy?
  • Where is America's Foreign policy does diplomacy fit in?
  • How is it possible to make diplomacy the first line of defense in a world that has related to fighting in order to solve disputes for all of history?
  • Why should Henry Kissinger's ideas even be discussed in today's political situation?
  • Should America adopt a strict foreign policy that directly correlates
  • with the ideas that Henry Kissinger presented in his book "Diplomacy"
  • Would the idea of Diplomacy in which Henry Kissinger discusses in his book "Diplomacy" have been a workable foreign policy in the 1960's?

Research journal #3b Narrowing research topic

In the textbook the first idea is to develop a list of possible debates that people may have about your topic.
  • Was Kissinger's Ideas for diplomacy in the 1960's practice to the full intent that he had originally intended?
  • Could Kissinger's Idea's be used in the current political situation involving America's war in Iraq?
  • Was Immanuel Kant in fact, the first person to come up with the idea that simple diplomacy could resolve foreign policy conflicts between countries.
From these potential topics I feel as though reading deeply into Immanuel Kant would intensely interesting, but it would also be far to much material for a 10 page paper. When It comes to applying his ideas to current situations I do not feel as though I could avoid bringing current political issues into the research and this would become a current issue research paper more than a paper that would stay focused on a concrete topic. At this time I feel as though the best topic to focus on would be whether or not Kissinger's ideas were fully tested in the ending of the Vietnam war or if they were used at all. I also plan to look at his entire idea of diplomacy and argue whether or not his policy is workable or not.

Research journal #3a Exploring Your Research topic

The first step that I took was to do a general search on Google scholar. I searched the words diplomacy and Henry Kissinger. Many of the pages that came up were just online excerpts from the book that Henry Kissinger wrote called Diplomacy. As I scanned through all of the search results I came to an article that Kissinger wrote about his book. In this article I was interested to see read that much of the ideas in Kissinger's book were ideas that were originally thought up by Immanuel Kant.

After that I began to look at what website people had bookmarked about Kissinger and diplomacy on delicious. While searching delicious I found a link to an article that Kissinger wrote recently in the Washington post. This article was extremely interesting because Kissinger explains the promises that president Obama has made since taking office and he takes the current foreign policy and compares it to the problems the he himself had faced first hand during the Nixon administration.

Research Journal #2b 3 Paragraphs about research topic

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on a Dallas street in 1963. Since this event many books and articles have been published about the controversy surrounding his death. Due the the lack of solid evidence related to this potential research topic, I came to the conclusion that it would not be the best choice to write a 3,600 research paper about. I then moved onto the idea of analyzing the current nationalized health care bill that is currently being presented to congress. Since the bill itself is over 300 pages long, and constantly changing, I decided that this topic would not be one that could be easily research or argued. Mainly through a process of elimination I have decide to reopen the debate that about America's foreign policy and that an ideology of diplomacy can or cannot be formed into a workable solution to the debate.
After skimming through numerous books about foreign policy and politics in general I have picked up a few facts about diplomacy. This was an idea that was first introduced by Henry Kissinger to be a workable way for a country to conduct foreign affairs in order to avoid major conflict and tragedy. I know that Kissinger's main political ideology was formulated around his perception of foreign policy. He also played a large role in the administration of Richard Nixon.
In this research paper I would like to learn how much of an impact Diplomacy had on the discussions and decisions that the Nixon administration implemented. Throughout this research process I would also like to understand the basic concepts of using diplomacy as a workable foreign policy. I do not fully understand how or if this idea shaped foreign policy during the Nixon administration. I would also like to look at the global political climate before and after Kissinger introduced his idea of Diplomacy and compare the two "political cultures" to see if his ideas actually changed the way that the world conducts business on a global scale.

Research Journal #2a Possible research topics

In order to narrow down my research topics into a workable idea that is scholarly as well as in depth enough to write 3,600 words on, I first looked at the areas of academic interests that I have. These ares were listed in my first research journal. After analyzing these areas I came up with these three topics that fit all the criteria of the research topic.
1. The controversy of the JFK assassination in 1963.
2. The current nationalized health care bill that is being debated in the congress.
3. Diplomacy being used as a workable foreign policy.

Research Journal #1 Areas of Academic Interest

Areas Of Academic Interest

  • Politics

-I love to read and study Politics over the last 50 year. I usually Read about Kennedy and Nixon. Both of these administrations were very interesting and fun to learn about. When it comes to politics I also spend a lot of my free time reading about new laws and bills that are and various stages of the system. My interest usually focuses on bills that pertain the the financial industry.

  • History, Primarily focusing on American History in the last 50 Years

-As I said under my first bullet point, Richard Nixon and John F Kennedy are two major players in American History that I enjoy to study the most. Perhaps my favorite part of history is learning about the personalities of major historical figures. I enjoy this because when you can see more about who is making laws, you can see why the laws were passed and the effect that they had.

  • Communication
- Although communications is not part of my major or any concentration that I plan to pursue, I have come to realize that the subject is very interesting. I like to see the effects that attitude and expression have when it comes to human interaction. I took a public speaking class last semester and I realized the it is a skill that everyone should have and use, I just do not believe that it is a worthwhile focus of study for me.

  • Business, Usually focusing of business ethics and financial management
- I see business ethics, at least in my definition, as a practical application of the skills that are gain from communication classes. These skills range anywhere from the attitude you have all the way to the way you dress. I have taken my ideas one step further and have started what I call, a social experiment. I am sure that you have noticed that I wear a tie to class everyday. This is because wearing a tie gives people a very serious impression. I am a very serious person when it comes to school and work. I enjoy the respect that comes automatically when I wear a tie. I am showing respect to the people around me and therefore they seem to show me respect at the same time.
